Mother's Day Flowers & GiftsMothers day is Sunday, May 11, 2008Do you know the history of Mother's Day ? Are you ready to surprise your mom with an amazing bouquet of flowers ? History of Mother's DayMother's day -- people would think it was created by mothers and for mothers just to get back at their families for all the trouble, the yelling and the pain they have caused, but contrary to our hopeful beliefs, that is not the case. Long ago, in Ancient Greece, Greeks began the tradition of honoring the mother of Gods, Rhea, however as times grew on, customs had been formatted and changed to suit the lives of the English. Between the years of 1500's to the 1600's, The English honored all mothers of England by celebrating the "Mothering Sunday", on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Not only did all family members arrive home for the celebration, but a big feast, with scrumptious cakes, delicatessens, gifts and especially flowers were presented. Fathers and sons would organize the celebration and award their mothers with jewelry and flowers. The children would be imaginative and create delightful gifts from whatever they would come across. Year by year, mothers were honored and received gifts, but as the celebration continued year after year, citizens of England also began to accommodate and honor the Mother Church. This way, being protected from harm by the church and honoring their mothers, families rejoiced both events at once. With this tradition expanding and evolving throughout the nation, one woman was so influenced by her life experiences that she decide to spread the happiness to the United States and began to campaign for mother's day to become official. Living a dull, yet busy and loving life, Ms. Ann Jarvis, author of the lyrics to "The Battle of Hymn of the Republic", was so impacted by her mother's death, that she needed to find a way to stabilize her emotional state. With all the support she could get from her blind sister Ellsinore, she wrote in newspapers and letters to President Wilson, and President Roosevelt for years until finally, they approved of the idea in 1911. By creating this holiday, Ms. Ann Jarvis was able to honor her mother's death on every second Sunday of May; with the hope that children would appreciate mothers while they were still alive, as well as strengthening the bonds and love within the families. As a symbol of love for their mothers, children and members of the family would send flowers. In traditional times the white carnation was most common, symbolizing purity and happiness. Nevertheless as times grew on, families became more original and gave roses, lilies or even exotic floral designs as gifts to their mothers. Nowadays arrangements with varying colors and flowers are given, symbolizing a unique love that only mother and her family would share. |
